Rework

Author : David Heinemeier Hansson Jason Fried

A radical new business book from business trailblazers Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson that offers a reappraisal of business best practice - advocating stripping everything back to bare essentials.

Easy to Read

The best thing about this book is its format. The book has chapters, but each section feels like a small chapter. You can read any section by itself. You do not need to read in order to understand it. Each section is very short. Most are one page or less. The longest is about three pages. There is a full-page picture between sections. This makes clear stopping points. This is great for busy people. I have kids and very little free time. I could read one section in five minutes. I never felt stuck in the middle of a chapter. I did not need to reread old pages. This book is perfect if you can read only for a short time.

Modern Business Advice

Most business advice is very old. Business today is different because of technology. So advice should also be modern.

The authors give advice that fits today’s work world. The chapter on hiring is very good. They say years of experience are not very important. What matters more is how smart, hardworking, and dedicated a person is.

They also say that managers who only give work to others are not good for small teams. Such managers often create useless work. The book focuses on what works today, not what worked long ago.

Easy-to-Remember Ideas

The book uses simple and strong words. The authors do not use extra words. I highlighted many lines in my book. Many sentences are easy to remember. This is helpful because I do not have time to read the book again and again. Short quotes are powerful. They can inspire action, just like quotes we see on social media.

Real Examples

The book gives real examples. Some examples are from the authors’ own company. Others are from successful businesses. These examples show that the ideas really work. They are not just theories. This makes the reader feel confident to try the ideas.

What I Did Not Like

The book is good, but not perfect. Here are a few things I did not like.

Motivation Did Not Last Long

While reading, I felt excited and agreed with many ideas. But I did not stop reading to apply them. I only wanted to continue reading. Still, after finishing the book, I went back to some chapters. So the book is useful even later.

I Did Not Agree With Everything

Some ideas did not match my experience. For example, the book says learning from mistakes is not very important. I do not fully agree. I believe we should learn from both success and failure. We should not think too much about mistakes, but we should still understand them. Not every idea works for every business. It is okay to choose what feels right for you.

Final Thought

Overall, I agree with most of the book. Rework is helpful and practical. This book is good for new and experienced business owners. It helps you think in a new way. It is never too late to change how you do business.
